Pātai Auau | Frequently Asked Questions
Stepping into rongoā Māori can be the beginning of a deeply personal healing journey. Many people arrive with pātai about what to expect, how to prepare, or whether this healing is right for them.
Rongoā works with the whole person. Tinana, hinengaro, and wairua, supporting the body to release what it has been holding and return to balance.
Below are some of the most common questions people ask before their first session.
What is rongoā Māori?
Rongoā Māori is traditional Māori healing that supports the wellbeing of the whole person. Tinana (body), hinengaro (mind), wairua (spirit), and whānau (family).
It is a holistic practice that works with the body’s natural ability to restore balance and release what is no longer needed.
Is this the same as a massage?
No, Rongoā Māori works holistically with the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of a person. Sessions may include kōrero, energetic shifts, emotional release, and deeper bodywork.
What can rongoā help with?
People come for many different reasons, including:
Stress and overwhelm
Emotional release
Trauma held in the body
Physical pain or tension
Burnout and fatigue
Feeling disconnected or out of balance
Personal or spiritual healing journeys
Every person’s healing journey is unique.
What happens during a session?
Sessions usually begin with kōrero to understand what is happening for you.
Karakia/Kaupare is always done before beginning the bodywork. Mirimiri or romiromi is then guided by what the body is holding and ready to release.
Sometimes emotions or memories may surface during the session. This is a natural part of the healing process.
Will it be painful?
Some Romiromi techniques can involve deeper pressure. At times this can feel intense as the body releases long-held tension.
The work always follows what your body is ready for and your comfort is respected throughout the session.
Is emotional release normal?
Yes. Emotional release can sometimes occur during or after a session.
This might include crying, laughter, shaking, yawning, or deep breathing. These responses are the body’s way of letting go of stored tension and energy.
What might I feel after a session?
After a session you may experience:
Deep relaxation
Emotional release
Tiredness
Mild soreness in the body
A sense of clarity or lightness
Drinking water and allowing time to rest can help support the integration of the work.
We always recommend going for whakawaatea/cleanse at the ocean (just at the end of our street) after a session, especially after Romiromi. If you are unable to do this then an Epsom salt bath is also good.
Rongoā Māori can sometimes continue working in the body after your session. It is normal for emotions, memories, or shifts in awareness to arise as the body processes and releases what it has been holding.
Gentle self-care such as rest, drinking water, spending time in nature, journaling, or connecting with supportive people can help with integration.
If you are experiencing significant emotional distress, it is important to seek support from a qualified health professional.
How many sessions will I need?
Healing is different for everyone.
Some people feel benefit from a single session, while others return for ongoing support as part of their wellbeing journey.
Do I need to be Māori to receive rongoā?
No. Rongoā Māori is available to anyone who approaches the space with respect and openness.
Do you offer ACC sessions?
Yes. Kotiora is an approved ACC vendor.
How far in advance should I book?
Appointments are often booked several weeks in advance, so booking early is recommended.
What if I feel called to this healing?
Often people feel a quiet pull toward rongoā.
If you feel drawn to this mahi, trust that feeling. Healing often arrives at the right time in a person’s journey.
Do I need to shower before arriving for my session?
Yes, out of respect for our kaimahi, please arrive fresh & clean.
Is rongoā Māori a replacement for medical or mental health care?
Rongoā Māori supports holistic wellbeing but it is not a substitute for medical or mental health treatment.
If you have a medical condition, are experiencing significant mental health challenges, or require clinical support, please continue to work with your doctor, therapist, or other qualified health professionals alongside your healing journey.
What if I am not ready for deep healing work?
Rongoā often works with what the body and wairua are ready to release. Some sessions can be deeply transformative.
It is important that you come to your session with openness and personal responsibility for your healing journey. This space is here to support you, but it is not a quick fix. Healing is a process.
